State Expands its Enforcement of Gas Stations

NEWARK - State and local Weight and Measures staff will be monitoring and inspecting gas stations throughout the three-day Labor Day weekend. Additionally, the state Division of Consumer Affairs will add investigators from its Office of Consumer Protection to work with Weights and Measures inspectors to increase oversight of gas stations over the weekend.

"With a traditionally busy travel weekend looming, investigators will be out across New Jersey to ensure State regulations are being followed," Consumer Affairs Director Kimberly Ricketts said. "We have no tolerance for gas station owners who try to rip off motorists."

The complaint line at the State Weights and Measures office in Avenel will be staffed throughout the Labor Day weekend from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Consumers can contact the complaint line at 732-815-4840 or file complaints via the Consumer Affairs’ web site at

At the direction of Acting Governor Richard J. Codey, the State Police will be monitoring gas stations as part of its expanded patrols during the holiday weekend.

State inspectors today shut down some pumps at the Mobil gas station on Oak Tree Road in Edison when the pumps were found to be defective. The pumps cannot be reopened until they are repaired and re-inspected.

Additionally, within the past two weeks, three gas stations in South Jersey were cited for selling gasoline that did not meet minimum octane levels posted on the pumps.
