Attorney General Harvey and Division of Consumer Affairs
Issue Warning About Hurricane Katrina-Related Scams

NEWARK — As victims of Hurricane Katrina deal with the destruction and devastation resulting from the storm, Attorney General Peter C. Harvey and Consumer Affairs Director Kimberly Ricketts today warned New Jersey residents to be wary of con artists seeking to benefit themselves under the guise of helping storm victims.

"Many people respond with compassion and generosity when disaster strikes others. Unfortunately, con artists see the victims’ woes as another opportunity to profit. We urge New Jersey residents to be wary of potential scams and to notify us of requests for contributions that appear suspicious," Attorney General Harvey said.

All charitable organizations soliciting donations and contributions in New Jersey are required to register with the Charities Registration Unit within Consumer Affairs. Residents can check on whether an organization is registered by going to the Consumer Affairs web site, http://www.njconsumeraffairs.com or by calling the Charitable Registration Unit at 973-504-6215.

"We stand ready as a resource to assist residents who wish to make a donation to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina," Director Ricketts said. "If you are contacted and asked to make a donation or contribution, inquire how you can get back in contact with the organization. Then check with us to make sure the organization is registered and legally permitted to operate in New Jersey."
